In 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson published ‘Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes’, an account of his intriguing journey accompanied by his donkey, Modestine. Starting at the southern end of the Massif Central, this walk takes you across the Cevennes to the edge of the Midi.

  • Day 1 :Arrival Chasseradès . The Chaptal family run the charming Hôtel des Sources and the restaurant serves great meals on the terrace. Overnight in a A friendly, family run hotel HB.

    Day 2 : Walking time 4h/ 14km
    Chasseradès to Le Bleymard. After passing through the little village of L’Estampe you climb the densely wooded hill of Goulet. This is the beginning of the Cévennes. Overnight in comfortable hotel HB

    Day 3 : Walking time 5h/ 18km
    Le Bleymard to Pont de Montvert
    Climb the Finiels summit for impressive views, sometimes as far as the Mediterranean. Pont de Montvert has many fine 16th century houses built on rocks above the waters. Overnight ina family run hotel HB

    Day 4 : Walking time 4h30/ 16km
    Pont de Montvert to Florac. Most of today’s walk is along the Bouges ridge with views across the Cévennes. Florac spans the confluence of the Tarnon and the Tarn. Overnight in an excellent 3 star hotel HB.

    Day 5 : Walking time 4h30/ 16km
    Florac to Cassagnas
    You quickly find yourself in the steep, red and rocky sided Mimente valley, which has dramatic views. Tonight’s accommodation is in the tiny village of Cassagnas, which has a permanent population of only 20 people. Overnight in a friendly and welcoming chambre d’hote. Hb

    Day 6 : Walking time 5h/ 18km
    Cassagnas to St. Germain de Calberte
    You can, if you wish, detour up Mont Mars for a view over this heavily forested area. There are many chestnut groves, once the staple diet of the population. Overnight in a nice family run hotel HB.

    Day 7 : St. Germain de Calberte to St. Jean du Gard
    Some of the walk is spent on the paved road ‘Corniche des Cévennes’, built for the military during the reign of Louis XIV. Descend from the Cévennes into the Midi and see the changes in the landscape. On reaching the lowest part of the walk you’ll find yourself in the land of the grape. Overnight in a charming hotel decorated in typically Cevenol style. B&B
